The People That Surround City Hall

Amanda Marshall has been living in Philadelphia for the past two years as a student of the Philadelphia School of Fine Arts. She currently resides in the “Gayborhood” located at 12th and Locust. Walking through City Hall to catch her train home she explained that she really hates the way Philly smells but can always appreciate the architecture.

Eric White of Mount Airy has lived there the entire 35 years of his life. He works at City Hall and was on his Cig break when I caught him. Eric works as the executive assistant to Councilman Tasco. Eric loves the thriving nightlife that Philly has to offer but explained, “ There is just too much violence on the streets. They need to get rid of all the guns that are in this city. If they did that this place would get a hell of a lot better.”

Karen G would not disclose her last name because she works in the court system at City Hall. She has lived in Philadelphia the majority of her life and now resided in West Philadelphia, but loves to dine at Jones located on the East side of the city. She thinks that one of the worst things about Philadelphia are the pot holes that line the streets of Philly.

Kendall Wilson, a retired local reporter, sat on a bench on the lower level of City Hall. “I just come around still because this was my spot. I covered Politics for the Tribune and the Associated Press.” He now lives in South West Philly with his daughter and son who graduated from Temple just over five years ago. He explained, “ I love just about everything dealing with Philadelphia, it has so much to offer, it is the most historic city, and has the largest City Hall in the World!” After proclaiming his love for Philly he couldn’t think of a singles thing he really disliked about Philadelphia.

Louis refused to give me his last name, when asked how long he has been in Philadelphia he explained “ I been here all my life man, and still kickin’ it.” When I asked him what his favorite things and dislikes were about Philly he shouted repeatedly, “ BE SUCESSFUL FOR YOU! BE SUCESSFUL FOR YOU!”

Mark Knight has lived in Philly his whole life and currently resides at 23rd St. and Jefferson Ave. Mark explained that he was just “ takin it easy” when asked why he was in the area. He said that if he had to pick what he disliked about Philly it would be that there is just not enough money and not enough jobs for the people of Philadelphia. When asked what he loved most about Philly he replied, “You. Hahah you have to put that too!” Who knew this assignment would lead to love…

Teddy Dwell has been living in South West Philly for the past 9 years. Coming from The Bronx, the retired NYPD officer moved to Philly after his wife of 35 years past away. He told me the story of how he asked his “Amazon woman” to marry him at their Senior Prom. Teddy told me that his wife was hesitant at first but then explained, “Baby I love you like a fat girl loves cheesecake.” Teddy claims that he is often around City Hall because it is “Poppin’ man!” He loves Philly but would like to see a cleaner Philadelphia.

21- year-old, Tim McDermitt , just moved from Maryland to Philadelphia around two weeks ago. Skating solo around city hall, I warned him about how the officers would ticket him, little did I know that he was much more informed about the topic than I was.
“Philadelphia lost half of it’s tourist when they put a ban on skating in Love Park. In the Skate world Philadelphia was a major city, so much so that the X-Games were held here. Now its over”, Tim explained with sincerity. Although Philly shattered his skateboarding hopes He still enjoys the Philly nightlife and Cheese steaks.

Vince Scalone is a construction worker from Chicago that decided to leave the Philadelphia Airport during his lay-over. About to Fly to Paris he had his Camera ready already shooting some of the Philly scene before he boarded his plane for Europe. He said , “ I really enjoy how friendly the people of Philadelphia are, but I think they should do something about all the Bums on Market St. , It seems such a central location to have such blatant poverty.”

Willy Starks came to Philadelphia eight years ago and still does not have much love for Philly. He spends most of his time around City Hall and resident at the Arch St. Methodist Church in the shelter program located in the basement of the church. When asked what his favorite thing about Philadelphia he simply shook his head and replied, “I don’t even know anymore.”

One of my favorite places in Philly, its located in between the art museum and city hall. On a hot summer day it is a simple relief to feel the mist from the fountain upon your skin while wind blows in your direction.

Darfur Kids

I went to this art exhibit in west philly. It was much more different than I thought it would be. It was run by the Darfur Alert Coalition. The art work was certainly captivating. Through the oganization of "Doctors without boundries", each doctor gave the child that they treated paper and crayon to draw what their life was like. When I asked the leader of Coalition if they had a volunteer program in Darfur she eaxclaimed, " No, we can't do that it's a war zone there."

My internship consist of me going out to different events and taking pictures for it, and then sending them back into the office. Yesterday they sent me to a funeral. At St. Thomas of Villanova, a service in the name of Howard Porter was held. There were a few basketball greats and alot of pictures of people that no one would know. There was no press allowed inside. This is uderstandable, but my shots would have had a little bit more feeling to them if there was press allowed in the church. Is it bad that of all the photos I took, this is my favorite photo I took as I was leaving the church.

I took this pic last summer. Every time I look at it, it just makes me happy. I don't know this girl, but sometimes I think that I want to be her. I look through the same pictures on a frequent basis but i still haven't gotten sick of this one yet. I hope this summer is just as good as last summer.
